It started with a two-word request from a manager: "Artemide staande lamp."
I had to look it up. (It's Dutch for floor lamp, but it took me a minute.) That request eventually led me to a much bigger realization: most lighting problems in offices are not about finding the right brand. They're about buying a light before you understand the space it's supposed to light.
The problem I keep seeing

This approach worked for us, but we're a mid-size company with fairly predictable office layouts. If you're designing a showroom, a restaurant, or a retail space, the calculus is different. You need more layers, more control, and probably a lighting designer, not a purchasing manager.
Bottom line: buy light, not just lamps. If a fixture looks great but you can't explain what it does to the room, walk away. If a vendor can't tell you what's not included, walk away. And if you're choosing an electric chandelier, remember that the chandelier silhouette is a lighting spec hiding as a design choice.
Artemide happened to be the answer for many of our projects. But the real lesson isn't the brand. It's the question the brand forced me to ask: what is this light doing here?
