If you take away one thing from this: Most Artemide specification mistakes aren't about choosing the wrong fixture; they're about treating iconic design as decoration instead of lighting equipment. Get photometry, placement, and scale wrong, and a beautiful lamp becomes a $2,000 problem.
I'm a lighting specifier handling residential and commercial orders for nine years. I've personally made—and documented—14 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $23,000 in wasted budget. If you need a warm accent glow, the Laguna is excellent.

Here's the counterintuitive part: in a double-height lobby, a chandelier that is too large can make the ceiling feel lower. The eye compares it to the space around it. A slightly smaller piece—or one with a more open silhouette—reads as more luxurious because it preserves the volume. 'Beautiful chandelier' is a marketing phrase, not a specification. The specification needs dimensions, mounting height, and a sightline diagram.
High bay vs low bay light: the question I almost didn't ask
Last year, I nearly specified a linear Artemide system for a warehouse lobby because it looked clean in the renderings. The contractor asked: 'Have you thought about high bay vs low bay light?' I hadn't. The space had a 22-foot ceiling. The lobby needed something closer to a high-bay approach; the adjacent offices needed low-bay fixtures at a comfortable mounting height.
I kept asking myself: is a clean look worth a potential callback? The answer was no. High bay and low bay are not brand categories. They're physical categories. According to the IES Lighting Handbook, the practical threshold for high-bay is usually around 20 feet, but the exact number depends on the task, the optics, and the mounting surface. Low bay suits ceilings below 15–20 feet, where glare and ceiling brightness matter more. The overlap zone is a judgment call—and that's exactly where I've made mistakes.
Artemide does make architectural systems that work in high-ceiling public spaces, but only when you verify the optical attachments and beam spread. The brand name doesn't override the physics.
The specification checklist I use now
I'm not going to pretend this is exhaustive. It's the list that came from my mistakes.
- What is the light for? Ambient, task, accent, or architectural? If you can't answer in one word, don't order yet.
- What is the mounting height? This drives high bay vs low bay decisions, photometrics, and glare control.
- What does the surrounding architecture do? Mezzanines, columns, and beams change sightlines more than any render.
- Is the driver/dimming compatible? I once specified a beautiful dimmable lamp with the wrong driver for the control system. It didn't hum—it just didn't dim.
- What will maintenance access be? A low-bay fixture on a 22-foot ceiling is not a quick swap.
- Does the client understand the product's limitations? For the Artemide Laguna table lamp, that means telling them it's ambient, not a reading light.
Using this checklist, we've caught 47 potential errors in the past 18 months. Some were small. A few would have been expensive.
When I'd ignore all of the above
Granted, this approach has a downside. It makes lighting specification feel like engineering, and some clients want poetry. If you're buying a single Artemide piece for your own home because you love it, none of this matters. Romantic mistakes are allowed. I'd still buy the Laguna even if it never lights a single page.
But if you're allocating a client's budget, the poetry has to sit on top of a solid base. That's where the discipline pays off.
That said, I'm still capable of ignoring my own checklist on a Friday afternoon. I don't think that ever goes away. It just gets cheaper.
